What does your van actually cost you?
Most tradespeople know what their van cost to buy and roughly what a tank of diesel comes to. Far fewer could tell you what it costs them per working day — and that's the number that matters, because it comes out of every job you price.
Fuel is the obvious one, but it's rarely the biggest. Insurance, road tax, servicing and the MOT, tyres, the repairs you didn't plan for, and whatever you're paying monthly if it's on finance or lease — that lot adds up quietly in the background whether the van moves or not.
Put your real numbers in below and you'll get the annual total, the cost per mile, and the cost per working day. That last figure is the useful one: it's what every day has to cover before you've earned a penny.
This is a running-cost estimate only. It doesn't account for depreciation, VAT treatment, or how you claim vehicle costs against tax — those depend on how your business is set up, and your accountant is the person to ask.
